Ctrl + select six polygons like shown in the image above, on the side opposed to that with one poly selected.

Ctrl + select the four cornering polygons on the side opposed to that with 3 polygons selected.
Dotted Dice (Modeling simple models tutorial) - step 9
Finally, Ctrl + select five polygons on both diagonals on the remaining face.
