In today's tutorial I will show you how to easily create complex landscapes using heightmaps.

We will start in Photoshop with a blank document, 512 pixels wide by 512 pixels high. You can use any graphic software as long as it has a few features which we will be using later.

The first step is to fill the background layer with black. If your foreground/colors are set to the default white/black pair, you can do the fill quickly by hitting Ctrl + Backspace.
